We recently sat down with Ben McKillop, an HVAC Team Lead, to learn more about life as a CroppMetcalfe employee and what it means to be a five-star technician:

How did you get started in this profession? 

“My grandfather started in the HVAC trade in 1956 and my dad started in this trade in 1988. So naturally, I followed in their footsteps.” 

Why did you choose a career in skilled trades? 

“Having a career in a skilled trade means life balance and the assurance of always being able to find a steady job. Skilled trades are a necessity to practically everyone in the world, regardless of what the particular trade may be.”

How long have you worked at CroppMetcalfe? 

“I’ve been with CroppMetcalfe for just over 3 years now.” 

Can you describe your experience as a five-star technician? What does your typical day look like? 

“Being a 5-star technician is something that I take extreme pride in. It’s something that has to be earned and is not just given. 

My typical day goes from answering the phone for teammates to helping them with any issues they're having, to running some important HVAC service calls, and following up with customers and the office with any questions.” 

Why do you enjoy working for CroppMetcalfe? 

“CroppMetcalfe offers a good work/home life balance. The people here are one of a kind and, in my opinion, irreplaceable. You're expected to take care of the customers and their homes as if they were family, or if it were your house. That’s something that's hard to find with big companies. 

CroppMetcalfe is a supergiant in the blue-collar business industry. But within these walls is a company that holds true to the values that Mitch Cropp started years ago, maintaining the family feel and the comfort of a Mom-and-Pop shop. It’s something you will never find anywhere else.”

Any words of advice for up-and-coming technicians interested in a career with CroppMetcalfe? 

“Treat each workday as if it's the most important. Do not look at the clock and wonder when you're going to go home. Instead, wonder how many customers you can SERVE today. Remember to treat each team member as a friend and always be grateful that coming to work at CroppMetcalfe is something you are able to do.”
