It’s summer time and for many of us, that means fun, carefree vacations with family and friends. We spend our days lounging in the sun or reconnecting with relatives. And when we get back, we expect our homes to be just as perfect as we left them. The reality is, if the proper precautions aren’t taken to secure our homes while we are away, there can be serious issues awaiting our return.

The good thing is, there are a few quick things you can do to give you peace of mind while you’re away. Follow these few simple steps and know the feeling of true relaxation on your vacation this year.

1. Turn your main water supply off. It’s a simple step, yet not many people think about it before leaving for vacation. Closing the main water supply will cut off water to the inside of the house, stopping potential leaks before they begin, but will still allow the sprinklers to run outside.

2. Turn your Air Conditioner up to at least 80 degrees, or off entirely. Not sure which is best? Take a look at your system. If you have an EZ Trap or water protection on your system, turn your thermostat to 80 degrees. If you do not have water protection, turn your system off. That way, you’re protected from any leaks.

3. Have your home sprayed for pests. An empty house is the perfect place for a rodent or insect to sneak into.

4. Get your sump pump checked before taking off. A properly working sump pump will help keep water out of your basement after a heavy rainfall. Having your sump pump checked out before your vacation will help ensure you don’t return to a flooded basement.
