Signs of Termites
The springtime means warmer weather, blooming flowers, outdoor barbecues, and...termites?? That's right, the 'silent destroyers' love this warm weather as much as we do. As the next few weeks go on, it is important to start looking around your home for any possible activity of termites, before it's too late.
There are a few different types of termites to be aware of. These have different areas of attack.
With their visible wings, swarming termites look similar to flying ants. If you don't see a swarm, it is still a good idea to check for wings resembling fish scales, or dead termites around these area:
- Windows
- Doors
- Light fixtures
- Vents
Mud tube termites build 'mud' tunnels to travel above ground. Their mud tubes provide shelter and protection as the termites seek wood. You will find this type of termite near the following areas:
- Base of your house foundation
- Coming up expansion joints in garages or slab homes
- Along baseboards
- Around wood of your sub floor
Keeping an eye out for termite damage around the house is important. Termite damage to wood will sound hollow and will fall apart easily if probed. Buckling paint or tiny holes in wood are also clear signs of termite activity.
Keep in mind, finding termites in a structure does not mean you have an immediate emergency, but it is a good time to call a certified Pest Control technician to do an inspection.
