Honoring the Service of Our Co-workers

CroppMetcalfe retired men and woman veteran employees being honored together at CroppMetcalfe event.

November is here, which means that the upcoming holiday season is on everyone’s minds. But before we get too swept up in Thanksgiving menu planning or holiday gift shopping, we at CroppMetcalfe would like to take a moment to recognize the sacrifices of our country’s service men and women in honor of Veterans Day.

According to History.com, 16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war and another 5.2 million living veterans have served in peacetime. Each November 11th, we pay tribute to all American veterans who have served our country honorably, during both times of war and peace. Here’s some background information on how Veterans Day came to be:

The History of Veterans Day

Originally recognized as “Armistice Day”, the first Veterans Day was observed on November 11, 1919 — the first anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1938, Congress passed a resolution to make Armistice Day a national holiday.

In 1954, after both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the 1938 resolution to change “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day”.

Veterans Day was moved from November 11th to the last week in October for a period of time in the late 1960s through the early 1970s, which was not well-received by the States and caused a bit of confusion for the public. However, in 1975, President Ford signed a law that returned Veterans Day observance to its original date of November 11th, which we still honor today.
