PEPCO Tune-Up Program FAQ’s

Who is eligible for a PEPCO rebate?
The HVAC Efficiency Program is available to all PEPCO Residential customers in Maryland who have a central cooling system. In addition, heat pumps are eligible for a rebate during a heating check up. Gas and oil heating systems are not eligible for rebates.

Do I have to pay for additional work on my equipment to qualify for the PEPCO rebate?
Possibly. PEPCO requires that your equipment efficiency rating, based on the PEPCO standards, improve by 10 points from the initial (before tune-up) readings to the final (after tune-up) reading. As part of your tune up, we will clean your filter or replace it if you have one available, clean your condensor (outdoor) coil, and perform a full maintenance check and tune-up of your system. There may be other repairs or cleaning recommended which may be necessary to achieve PEPCO’s energy improvement standards. Recommendations will be provided in writing for your approval, prior to performing any work and to taking the final readings. CroppMetcalfe cannot guarantee you will reach PEPCO’s energy improvement standards without performing necessary cleaning or repairs.

Is the PEPCO program similar to a standard maintenance check?
Yes and No.

Yes:  CroppMetcalfe’s high quality maintenance check already includes many of the items required by the PEPCO tune-up.
No:  PEPCO’s program requires additional advanced tests and calculations which are not included in a normal maintenance check. Additionally, the program requires that the readings are taken twice, first after letting the unit run for 15 minutes and second after performing a maintenance check and required repairs. These items should add 15 to 45 minutes to the standard maintenance check.
Also:  PEPCO requires water cleaning of your outdoor coil. This is an extra service not normally included in a maintenance check. However, CroppMetcalfe is including a chemical cleaning of your outdoor condensor coil as part of this program. Chemical cleaning is much better than just hosing down your condenser coil and guarantees your coil is clean.

Is there anything special I need to do to prepare for the tune-up?
Yes. When CroppMetcalfe calls to tell you a technician is on the way, please lower the setting on your thermostat by 10 degrees. Doing this will ensure your system has been running for the required 15 minutes so we can get started on your tune-up right away.

How long will the tune-up take?
The average tune-up will take between 45 minutes and 1 ½ hours per system. This can vary based upon our findings and work recommended under the programs specifications.

How do I apply for my rebate?
The technician will supply and fill out a PEPCO tune-up verification worksheet which you must submit to PEPCO. You must also submit a rebate form which can be downloaded by clicking on the images at the bottom of this page.  PEPCO has told us it will take 6 to 8 weeks to process your rebate.

Please note: CroppMetcalfe does not have the ability to store the information gathered during the tune-up. If you lose your paperwork we will not be able to replicate the information.

CroppMetcalfe already performed my maintenance check. Can I apply for the PEPCO rebate?
Unfortunately you cannot. Because the PEPCO program requires us to gather very specific information which is beyond the scope of a standard maintenance check, we have no way to provide the information required by PEPCO to complete the tune-up verification worksheet.
